Government Water Schemes
The government has stepped in to help people with their water bills in various ways. Bill has gathered all of the relevant information below – and don’t worry, Bill’s checked that it’s correct as of March 2021.
The national WaterSure scheme caps your yearly bill regardless of the water you use. That means you will not pay more because you use more water. Please note this scheme is only available in England, Scotland and Wales.
In order to qualify, you would need to meet several conditions:
- Be on a water meter
- On certain qualifying benefits:
Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Working Tax Credit
Child Tax Credit awarded at a rate higher than the family element
and have either:
3 or more children under the age of 19
Or someone in your household with a medical condition requiring lots of water use.
Water Direct is a government scheme allowing you to make payments for essential services direct from your benefits, giving you peace of mind that your water bill is taken care of.
You can apply for Water Direct if you, or anyone in your household, receive any of the following State benefits:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment Support Allowance
- Universal Credit
- Pension Credit
- You must also owe at least £50 on your water account.
